Choosing a Guinea Pig as a pet

crop.jpgGuinea Pigs are cute little creatures that are intelligent, curious and love company. If you intend to buy only one guinea pig then make sure that he lots of human company so that he gets used to handling and also provide him with lots of toys that will keep him busy and interested.

Make sure that his guinea pig hutch is the right size for him. Guinea pig hutches must be purchased big enough for the guinea pigs when they is fully grown. They should be split into two areas: one closed in for the sleeping area and the other open to so that he can look out and see what is going on around him.

There are a number of different guinea pig hutches on the market to choose from but they are often quite small and so a separate exercise run is essential. Guinea pigs are playful little creatures and need to be able to run around in a safe area daily in order to keep happy and healthy.

When purchasing a guinea pig hutch it is important to ensure that you purchase the largest you can afford. Guinea pig hutches are probably the most costly item required to keep a guinea pig and they are usually found under the heading rabbit hutches. Exercise runs are usually found under the rabbit runs section.

As a general rule guinea pig hutches should be at least 4 times the length of the guinea pig stretched out when it is full grown. The longer the guinea pig is expected to remain contained in his hutch or the larger the number of guinea pigs you intend to be kept together, then the larger the hutch should be and the larger the exercise run should be.

Remember to keep the hutch hygienic by cleaning it out regularly. All animals like to live in a clean, fresh environment and guinea pigs are not an exception.

You will find that guinea pigs drink quite a lot and so a water bottle should be attached to the hutch. Always remember to change the water daily and provide your little pet with a good quality guinea pig food to keep him healthy.
