Did you know that in a head-on collision, anything in your vehicle which isn’t fixed in place will pose a huge threat to occupants of the car as it hurtles forwards – and this includes your beloved pet dog.
To help prevent this from happening, keeping your dog in the boot of your car with the use of a dog guard is essential for the safety of all of you.

The majority of dog guards are designed to fit vertically between the rear seats and the roof and can stop items getting through from the boot to the main seating part of your car. The primary aim of a dog guard is to your faithful pet in his place, but dog guards can also double up as a barrier to prevent any luggage you may have in the boot of the car from coming forward, which can be equally lethal to you and your family.

Most dog guards are produced using a series of extendable tubular bars or wire mesh and are wedged in without the use of hammers, screwdrivers or other hand held tools. However, you do need to make sure that once fitted, they are secure. If the dog guard fits poorly, then your dog guard will become yet another dangerous moving object if you are involved in a car crash.

Ideas-4-pets are suppliers of Saunders dog guards which are designed to fit most makes and models of vehicles and have proved to be a popular & quality product.

If you don’t see one to fit your particular car then ring us and we will make further enquiries for you.

Consider a dog guard to keep you, your passengers and your dog safe when travelling.

Also, if you dog is not firmly strapped in your car, he could cause the death of not only himself, but also of the driver or the passenger in the front seat. This is because a dog weighing roughly the same as a border collie actually weighs 72 stones if he is thrown to the front of a car travelling at 30mph !! Imagine the impact this has on either the driver or the passenger, not to mention the poor dog. It is unlikely that either the dog or the person he hits at that speed would survive.

This is the worst scenario, but even if things aren’t that bad, a dog guard will stop your muddy dog from soiling the back seat of your car with his paws or jumping around from one seat to the next in order to gain your attention.

Dog guards come in either tubular or wire mesh form and they are manufactured to fit most makes of vehicle. They are very easy to fit and do not require you to drill holes into your car as they have extendable legs which have a rubbery-type end on them which secures to the floor and ceiling of your car and the sides also extend to the width you require.

Just one thing you should consider – when fitting your dog guard into a vehicle with rear air bags, please consult your dealer or vehicle manufacturer to ensure the dog guard will not restrict reear air bag deployment in the event of an accident.

Be clean and safe – invest in a car dog guard to fit your vehicle.

Did you know that if a car travelling at 30 mph with a dog the size of a border collie on the back seat suddenly crashes that the dog could hit the passenger or drive in the front with the force of approx. 6 x 12 stone men ?

I read this in the newspaper recently and was stunned to say the least. I always have my dog safely secured in the back seat but many drivers don’t feel that it’s necessary.

I must admit that my first concern was for the safety of my dog and as she is a little Yorkie I purchased a booster seat which attaches to the car seat. She wears a harness which attaches to a strap in the seat and this allows her travel safely and also gives her the chance to see out of the window as we go.

Larger dogs are usually better in the back of the car and car dog guards are a great idea for keeping them contained and safe. Dog guards come in either tubular form or mesh and don’t require any drilling or screwing to fix them into place. Some are made to fit on the parcel shelf of the car and some fit on the headrests.

They are easily fitted as they are fairly universal and can be made to fit individual vehicles. You just need to know your make of car, the model and the year it was built and ideas-4-pets can check to see if a dog guard is available for your particular vehicle.

The tubular dog guards work a bit like a trombone – you just pull the tubes out at the side until they reach the edge of your car. Then you extend them upwards on the legs until they touch the roof. Hey Presto it’s done and the little rubber ends which secure the dog guard in place will not damage the interior of your car.

The advantages? Your dog is safely contained in the rear of your car and will not be skidding around on the back seat, falling off the seat if you pull up quickly or causing yourself, himself or your passengers serious harm or even death if you are in an accident. Worth the expense, don’t you think?

A few days ago I heard a story about a family who were driving to a wedding “do”. Dad was driving, mum sat in the front passenger seat, little David was in the back seat with his granny who was wearing her new hat.

Jasper the dog was in the back of the hatchback and unbeknown to the occupants of the car, he had taken quite a shine to granny’s hat which sported rather a large feather. Jasper had been watching in fascination as the feather bobbed up and down enticingly as granny excitedly chatted to little David.

Without any warning Jasper was over the back seat and granny’s hat was knocked off at great speed as Jasper took a lunge at the feather !! You can imagine the rest ……….!!

A funny story perhaps, but not for poor granny. As mum later reminded dad, if he had purchased a good-fitting car dog guard granny’s hat would still be in one piece, the dog would not have been in serious trouble and the day would not have been ruined.

Dog guards are not expensive. They are available in both wire mesh and tubular design and are easily fitted into the car with no hassle, no drilling, no tools and no mess.

The result is a dog that is kept contained in the back of the car – safe and secure. Seats are then left clean and vacant for human passengers and the occupants of those seats know that they (and their headwear) are safe from unwanted attention from the family dog.

How many times do you see people driving along with their dog sitting on the front seat next to the driver? We all know that dogs our love being with us but is it fair on us or on our dogs to let them travel like this?

Wouldn’t it be safer for the driver and the dog if the dog was contained behind a dog guard in the rear of the vehicle? Dog guards are really easy to fit as you don’t need to drill into the car or use screws and screwdriver or hammers etc.

Some dog guards sit on the headrests and others on the parcel shelf and all you do is pull them out to the width of your car and there you are !! You can buy them in tubular or mesh form so whether you have a small dog or a larger type you can get a dog guard to suit your needs.

The dog guards on ideas-4-pets site are made by Saunders and are a quality item and are specially made to fit individual vehicles. Just look for your make and model of car and check the year of production and then choose either a tubular or mesh dog guard.

The mesh dog guards are ideal if you have a small dog that can also double up as an escape artist or they are good if you dog is the aggressive type. The tubular dog guards are fine for larger breeds of dog who won’t be able to squeeze themselves between the bars.

Having a dog guard makes good common sense. Your dog is contained so that if you have pull up quick he isn’t going to be hurled against the wind screen or plummeted onto the floor of your car. Equally, being contained will prevent him from trying to get on to your knee or distract you in other ways whilst driving.

Summer is on its way and we are all thinking of day trips out and picnics with the kids. Of course the dog comes too – why should he miss out on all the fun?

Firstly we pack the car with rugs to sit on, baskets or rucksacks full of sandwiches, crisps, cakes and drinks and the brightly coloured plastic picnic plates from last year which you’ve recently found in the back of a cupboard that’s not often used. Don’t forget the waterproofs just in case it decides to rain !!

The car’s packed, the kids are strapped in the back seats and lastly there’s the dog. How can we stop him from getting at the sandwiches which are neatly crammed between the kids on the back seat?

Easy, invest in a dog guard. Dog guards are easily fitted and you don’t need any tools to do the job because there are no holes to be drilled and no permanent fittings required. They are also just as easily removed when you no longer need one.

Choose from wire mesh or tubular dog guard – a tubular one is ideal for a larger type dog or the wire mesh ones, made from 2? square welded mesh are fine for smaller dogs or those types of dog who can get aggressive.

All the dog guards on ideas-4-pets site are made from welded tubular steel for maximum strength and are also height and width adjustable. Depending on the type and age of your car, the dog guard sits either on the parcel shelf or goes to the floor of your car. Because they are vehicle specific you know it will fit!!

Whichever you choose, you will have peace of mind knowing that your dog will be kept safe and contained in the back of your car and you will be free to drive safely with the bonus of having your picnic intact when you arrive at your destination !!
