Choosing a cage for mice
There are such a lot of cages on the market that there is no such thing as the ‘best’ type of cage for mice. All mice cages have advantages and disadvantages and all you can do is weigh up the pros and cons and make a personal choice.
The main thing to consider is space. Mice can be kept in in wire cages, glass and plastic tanks and housing systems and they all offer suitable accommodation for your mouse.
Points to consider: Male mice are generally bigger than females and may fight if living in a small cage together. Give male mice more space in their cage to avoid this. Check the bar spacing if you opt for a wire cage as this may need to be smaller for females than males.
How many should you buy? Remember that the more mice you buy, the bigger the cage and the more space your will need. Baby mice, apart from obviously being smaller, are quicker and livelier than older mice so can easily escape through small gaps. They also like to climb so make sure they cannot injure themselves in the cage you choose.
Where should you keep the mice? If space is at a premium, then a small based but tall cage might suit your requirements. However, if you have a large surface area but height is is a problem, then a wide, short cage might better suit your needs. If you intend keep your mice in a room with other animals, particularly cats or rats, then a solid walled cage should provide your mice with more protection than a wire one as their little feet and tails would poke through. For the same reason, a solid cage provide shelter from any draughts if the cage is placed near an open door or window. If you decide to place the cage in a warm room then a barred cage would provide adequate ventilation.
How much should you pay? The Arena Playstation is a good choice as these are not only a cage, but also a playground for your mouse.
