How to interact with dogs
It is important to interact in the correct manner when meeting a dog that you do not know. Before approaching a dog always ask the owner if the dog is safe with people. If the owner tells you that the dog likes people then approach slowly without raising your arms or making sudden movements towards the dog as some dogs are frightened and intimidated by this type of behaviour.
If you approach dogs off the lead or near their dog kennels as they can be territorial. It is always advisable to give dogs plenty of space so that they do not feel trapped or scared. Try to talk quietly when around dogs and do not shout or scream as this type of excited behaviour can cause them to be feel alarmed.
Only feed a dog if the owner has told you that this is ok as some dogs may have allergies you do not know about or may snap at your hand in their excitement to get access to the dog food or treat.
Never approach dogs you do not know if they are asleep in their dog beds, feeding or drinking and do not try to remove a toy from a dog’s possession. Dogs can be possessive around their food and toys and may snap at you.
Never lose your temper with a dog or hit, smack or kick a dog. This behaviour is very irresponsible and does not teach a dog to be either well behaved or to have respect for you. Dogs should be taught gently, consistently and with assertiveness not anger or bullying. Dog cages and puppy play pens can be useful aids in helping to train your puppy at an early age.
It is not advisable not to play rough and tumble games where the dog chases you as dogs do not always realise that this is a game and you may get hurt.
