Important points to remember when buying a dog kennel
Dog kennels are important purchases if you wish to keep your dog outside for long periods of time.
The main point to consider is how big the kennel should be. The answer is simple - If possible, find out the internal size of the dog kennel and measure this out on the floor. Get your dog to lie in the measured space and this will give you a visual idea of how much room your dog will require to lie down comfortably.
If still in doubt, go for the larger size as your dog can never have too much room but can easily be cramped which will not do him any good in the long-run.
If you have a puppy that you wish to kennel outdoors then it is a good idea to find out from the breeder how large the puppy is expected to be when adult. This way, you can make sure that the dog kennel you purchase will still be big enough for him when he is fully grown.
When first introducing your puppy or adult dog to its dog kennel it is important to make the process an enjoyable experience. Put his favourite bedding and treats in the kennel and let him go inside in his own time. Forcing your dog to enter the kennel will only make him suspicious and afraid.
With a small puppy it is advisable to put plenty of bedding inside the kennel so that the puppy will feel safe, secure and warm.
Remember that your dog kennel and bedding will have to be cleaned on a regular basis to keep it hygienic so it is important to purchase dog kennels that have easy access eg. an opening roof.
Always buy a quality dog kennel as it will last longer and will provide your dog with a safe and comfortable shelter for many years.
