Leaving dogs outside

easyship_10-roof-copy.jpgDogs love to outside in the fresh air, especially in the good weather. They love to smell the air, feel the warmth of the sun, watch people or cars go past and generally keep an eye on things.

When owners have to go out to work it can be hard on the family dog as they tend to be left shut up alone in the kitchen where they can’t see out or have any fresh air. Some dogs are luckier and have the run of the house or even have a dog flap in the door which allows them to go out into the garden.

Unfortunately not all gardens are suitable for dogs to roam in - it could be that the garden isn’t secure enough or that the garden is well-tended and not there for dogs to bury bones or dig up expensive plants !!

This is where an outside dog run is ideal. Dog runs come in various designs - either as part of an outdoor dog kennel building, as a separate run with a small dog kennel inside it for shelter or with a roof on to protect the dog from the weather.

A dog run will keep you dog contained whilst allowing him to see what is going on in the world around him. Just place his toys and a dog kennel or waterproof dog bed inside for him to lie on and you can happily go to work knowing that your dog will be happy and safe. Most dog runs are made from hot dipped galvanised metal so will not rust and they are easily built using nuts and bolts. As mentioned previously, dog runs can be purchased with or without a roof and can also be purchased as 3 sided, so that you can attached them to the side of an existing wall or shed.

Always remember of course to leave plenty of clean, fresh water for your dog in an easily accessible place within the run.

If you have the space in your garden for a dog run then it is a good investment for both you and your dog

Hi I chose to get a dog run for our weimaraner. we picked the galvanised metal run and insulated kennel as she will chew wood out on walks etc. it has a roof on and she seems very happy in it when we go out. she can also use it all year round with it being insulated ans roofed but she does some in when we areht there as she is a big part of our family

    Debbie,
I have got to get a dog run for my 14 month old weimaraner, what size did you buy and do you think it is big enough!?
    Thanks
    Davinia

    Hi Davinia

A 3m x 2m run is a good size for a weimeraner but as with all dog runs, the bigger the better. A dog can’t have a run that is too big, but you wouldn’t want your dog cooped up in a run that was too small.

You can either buy a modular galvanised run with a roof which will come with all the fixings and fitting you require or alternatively you can buy the galvanised panels and roofing separately so that you can build the run to your own specifications.

You can choose to have the panels with either bars or mesh and because they are galvanised they will not rust in bad weather.

An insulated dog kennel will ensure that your dog is warm and dry in the worst of weathers and you can choose to have the kennel inside the run or opt for a void panel which will butt up against the kennel pop hole so that the kennel can be placed outside of the run giving your dog more space inside the run.
