What size dog kennel should I buy?

kevinchalet2_lrg.jpgThe most frequently asked question I think we have is “what size dog kennel should I buy for my dog?” It’s a difficult question for ideas-4-pets to answer outright because we haven’t seen your dog and there are even differences in sizes within the dog breed.

Some dogs are smaller than others for instance - females tend to be smaller than males, older dogs unfortunately can sometimes get fat, breeds such as Jack Russells tend to come in various sizes, so it’s not always easy.

As a general guide it’s a good idea to measure to your dog’s dog bed. If he fits in his dog bed easily without hanging over the sides, then buying a dog kennel with an internal measurement about the size of the dog bed will be fine.

Dogs do not like their dog kennel to be too large as they like to curl up in a comfortable “den”, a space that they can call their own where they feel safe and secure.

However, if you intend to buy a dog kennel with an attached dog run, then the kennel area will be quite large and you can either put a smaller dog kennel inside the kennel area or provide your dog with a dog bed that will fit in easily and give your dog room to wander around as well !!

A dog run attached to the kennel gives him the freedom to play outside in the fresh air without getting wet in the rain and also allows him to see what is going on in the world in a safe environment. Your dog is unlikely to “run” in the dog run so you just need one big enough for him to stretch his legs and move around. If you have more than one dog then obviously you will need a bigger run as they may want to chase each other around and play.

Whatever you choose, you can never get a dog kennel or a dog kennel with a dog run attached that will be too big for you dog as dogs love space !!
