Chicken Run

Chicken Run (the film) has a lot to answer for! Overnight, Mel Gibson turned chickens from anonymous egg-laying, convenience pets into warm, cuddly creatures that deserved the best chicken houses, hen houses and chicken runs around. It was a fabulous film, transforming our ideas about chickens and their welfare -work continued by some of today’s top celebrity chefs who are campaigning for better and more humane conditions in commercial chicken houses, chicken runs and hen houses.

We can’t entirely blame Chicken Run for the upsurge in keeping chickens but there’s no doubt it is a fast-growing hobby. If you’re keeping birds you need a chicken house or a hen house. Here at Ideas-4-pets, we’re focused on providing the very best quality and value for our customers and helping you choose the most appropriate hen house, chicken house and / or chicken run.

Choosing your chicken house, chicken run or hen house

It doesn’t matter whether you’ve got just two or two hundred chickens, you need to find a chicken house, chicken run or hen house that’s appropriate for them and for the space you have available. You might want to start with a stand-alone chicken house or hen house but if you don’t want to run the risk of your chickens running off, you might want to consider a chicken run as well, which can fit onto your chicken house or hen house. Free range is great if you have got the space, plus understanding neighbours who don’t mind your chickens and hens running over their gardens as well, but for safety and security, a chicken house or hen house is easily supplemented by a chicken run, giving your birds extra space in which to scratch around. Ideas-4-pets have both normal and extra height chicken runs, offering flexibility of choice for you.

A chicken run, hen house and chicken house for every garden

We’ve got lots for you to choose from at Ideas-4-pets. Our Penbury Chicken run can also be used not only for chickens but also for rabbits and chicks. We've also got three-sided chicken runs to attach to your coop so your chickens can run round in safety. And our Lucky Chicken Runs provide plenty of space and fresh air. Our Bedgebury chicken house is made from pressure-treated Scandinavian Redwood timber and is also great for ducks or bantams and The Forsham is a great hen house for broody chickens. If you're looking for a larger hen house, take a look at our Cozy Chook Chicken House, suitable for up to 4 chickens. If you’re looking for a chicken house for a larger number of birds, our Lenham Chicken House is ideal.

Keep your birds safe with the right chicken house, chicken run or hen house Foxes are of course the main predator of chicken, hens and ducks, and they’re prevalent in both rural and urban areas. You don’t want to invest in choosing and buying your hens or ducks only for your chicken house, hen house or duck house to let you down when a fox comes calling.

Duck Run? Duck House? Not yet a film

Ducks are just as cute as chickens and also deserve the best duck house accommodation. Keeping ducks is potentially a good way to save money for you and your household, but could also be a sideline business, if you can supply duck eggs to restaurants for example. We’re a nation of animal lovers here in the UK and we like our birds to have comfortable duck houses and hen houses. For happy ducks you need a duck house that suits your birds and your budget. Ducks are flock animals that need company, so your duck house must be big enough to accommodate your flock, plus any potential expansion to the flock.

A duck house for each breed

If you’re putting all your birds together in one duck house you need to buy a large duck house. Of course if you have different breeds and your ducks are in just one duck house they may well inter-breed. So if you want to keep your breeds separate you’ll need a duck house for each breed.

Weather-proof your duck house

The UK is not renowned for its warm sunny climate and ducks aren’t great lovers of the cold. In the winter, your ducks may well spend most of their time inside the duck house so any extra space you can give them will be a bonus.

Siting your duck house

Ducks carry lots of water in their feathers so it’s best if you can site your duck house a good distance from the water, so they can get rid of the water before they go inside. And if you have the space, try to move your duck house around every few months or so, to give the ground time to recover. Most important of all of course – tuck your ducks up safely in their duck house before it gets dark!

Alternatively, if dogs are more you're thing, you may want to take a look at our dog products and dog guards
