There’s no doubt that guinea pigs and rabbits are particularly suitable as first pets for children. But in the excitement of acquiring these animals, it can sometimes be forgotten that they need a fair bit of looking after. Here are a few pointers about rabbit and guinea pig care.
Guinea Pig Care
There’s more to guinea pig care than you might think. Guinea pigs need a lot of room, so make sure you have a guinea pig hutch which is spacious. In practice, this means the dimensions of the guinea pig hutch should be at least 18 inches wide, 14 inches high, and 25 inches deep. If your guinea pig hutch has a mesh or wire floor it could hurt your pet’s feet.
Your guinea pig hutch should have plenty of lining material, and hay for nesting. Another crucial part of guinea pig care is providing a water bottle with a sipper tube, and a heavy food bowl which can’t be gnawed or tipped over.
Because cage lining doubles up as bedding and toilet in a guinea pig hutch, regular cleaning out is another important part of guinea pig care. Disinfect the guinea pig hutch thoroughly each time.
In terms of nutritional guinea pig care, these animals love their Vitamin C. Provide things like cabbage and kale, and fruit.
Finally, grooming and brushing are also important parts of guinea pig care.
Looking After Your Rabbit
Many of the same principles apply to caring for your pet rabbit. You’ll need a few basics for caring for your pet, including perhaps a rabbit run and one of the many rabbit cages on the market. Grooming, exercise, feeding and watering are all important, as is adequate housing in clean and properly sized hutches or rabbit cages.
