If you are going to purchase an outdoor dog run for your dog, then keeping it clean is a must in order to keep your dog in good health. Remember that grass or gravel surfaces can quickly become muddy and soiled and are difficult to keep clean which means that your dog could suffer poor health as a consequence.
Ideally, you should have a flat surface without any gaps such as a solid concrete base or concrete paving slabs. Remember to properly point the gaps in between the slabs with cement to prevent them from trapping any dirt and if you build the base about 6 inches larger than the dog run, then the run will sit easily on to it instead of at the edge, which could cause cracking.
Some dog owners have laid down thick rubber matting like that used in horse stables. These can also provide an easy to clean surface and are quick to lay and can moved quicky and easily if necessary.
