Why choose Western Red Cedar? - It is beautiful - has rich grain & vibrant colour
- It is strong - Western red cedar has excellent dimensional stability and endurance. It lays flat, stays straight and is less likely to twist and crack like other wood products.
- It is long lasting - The supremacy of western red cedar as an all-weather building material is entirely natural. It contains natural oils that act as preservatives to help the wood resist insects and decay. Properly finished and maintained, western red cedar will age gracefully and last for many years.
- It is non-toxic - It is safe for all uses and requires no chemical treatment unless the wood is in direct contact with the ground, in which case a protective sealant will protect it against moisture.
- It is aromatic - Western red cedar is probably best known for its distinctive aroma. Over time, the wood remains subtly aromatic and the characteristic fragrance adds another dimension to its universal appeal.
It is important to properly level and prepare the foundation for the playhouse Care and Maintenance For best results, we recommend you apply some kind of protective finish to your shed within 2 weeks of assembly. Discolouration will occur over time, but dirt is the usual cause and this can be removed with a mild detergent and a brush. Expected life - the following choices are available with their expected lifetimes Water-repellent preservative and oil (with addition of fungicide) 1-2 years Semi-transparent stain (latex oil-based) 3 years Solid colour stain - 100% acrylic latex (apply stain blocking primer first) 4-5 years Paint - 100% acrylic formulation (apply an oil-based primer first) Up to 10 years
BASE PREPARATION As with any structure, it is important to provide a firm, level and square base for your new garden building. Without a suitable base, your building will be unstable and deteriorate rapidly. Base preparations need not be elaborate and two simple alternative methods are suggested below. Other materials and methods can however be employed. Whatever method you choose, it is important that the end result is above all, firm, level and square. Slab Base Providing the proposed site is not subject to regular flooding, your new building can be set directly onto a concrete pad, or paved area as shown. If laying slabs, firm up the sub-surface and bed into sand, gravel or sand and cement dry mix. Floor Bearers (Treated timber or concrete) Floor bearers laid across the run of the flooring joists provide a simple alternative to a paved base. Level the overall area, removing turf or other vegetable matter. Lay bearers, one at each end and equally spaced between, ensuring that each bearer is leveled to the next by using a spirit level.
